Vanessa Bernice (Phelps) Green was born to Eddie Phelps Sr. and the late Vernetta B. Phelps in Los Angeles, California on February 20, 1971. She attended Indianapolis Public Schools and graduated from Arlington High School.
Vanessa, affectionately known as Prissy, gave her life to Christ, being baptized in Jesus' name, and was filled with the precious gift of the Holy Ghost sometime in the late '80s. As a very young child, she learned the importance of service from her mother through the helps ministry and volunteer work she did in the church and the community. This servant identity was a part of her spiritual DNA. If she was available and able to volunteer, she would. Vanessa was an intentional giver. Whether it be her time, talents, and/or her treasure, she embodied the heart of philanthropy in the purest and broadest sense. She would give her last dime, knowing that her treasures were to be stored up in heaven.Vanessa was also a fierce advocate for the least among us and made it her business, through the Lord to tend to a multitude of needs.Vanessa was quiet yet resolute. Her demeanor and calm spirit drew many from differing backgrounds and lived experiences to her. She served the Lord and others in ways that no one else could, which is now part of the legacy she leaves behind.
Vanessa always kept her children close to her; and she was dedicated to her efforts of raising compassionate, caring, and Christ-filled heirs. In other words, she gave them back to the Lord to be used for his glory. Everything she did was about God using them all.
Her career trajectory encompassed a plethora of service-oriented roles in multiple industries. These included education, child-care, culinary arts, creative arts, health, and hospitality and entrepreneurship. She retired from a long-term position in teaching at Christ Temple Christian Academy. And then continued her dedicated service to the well-being of children, youth, and adults coming full circle with her love for education naturally and spiritually.
Vanessa was well-known for her kindness, patience, wisdom, long-suffering, and willingness to withstand the enemy while always giving glory to her heavenly father. She was a spiritual warrior and a true intercessor for so many near and far. She relentlessly sent up prayers for others, even when she needed prayer herself. At the same time, the simple things in life gave her great joy. Some include skating, going to garage sales, thrifting, arts and crafts, swimming, playing fun games and cooking for her friends and loved ones.
Vanessa Bernice Green departed this life on June 23, 2023 at the age of 52. She was preceded in death by her mother Vernetta B.
