Mrs. Stella Towne Obituary

Stella Mae Towne was born June 1, 1947 to Elmer and Annie Chandler in Dancy, Mississippi. Stella professed her faith in Christ at an early age and became a member of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church. During adolescence, Stella enjoyed helping take care of her siblings, sewing, and observing others as she was a quiet child. Stella moved to Missouri in the late 1950s. She graduated from Gideon High School in 1965 and shortly thereafter, relocated to Indianapolis, Indiana. Stella married Aaron Towne Sr., on December 15, 1969.

Stella Towne was a trailblazer. She was one of the first Civilians hired in Communications at the Indianapolis Fire Department, as well as the first black woman. She was promoted through the ranks, serving the department and citizens as Trainer, Assistant Supervisor and Supervisor.  During her tenure she received many certifications including Public Safety Telecommunicator, National Incicent Management System, Emergency Medical Dispatch, State of Indiana Emergency Medical Technician and many more. In her career she demonstrated qualities of her life, love of God, integrity and dedication. She retired after 29 years in 2009.

Stella loved shopping, garage sales, cooking, traveling, and sharing family history. She was able to light up rooms with her smile and gentle laugh but she had no problem speaking her mind. Stella loved the Lord and would always share the gospel. She was a member of New Hope Missionary Baptist Church where she was used of God as the Church Anniversary Chairwoman, treasurer and the Welcome Coordinator.

Stella had a special relationship with her family. She was often found on the phone catching up with family near and far. She always said she was blessed and thankful for her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren; she regarded them as her garden.

Stella, a honest, wise, and virtuous woman, was a true servant of the Lord. She was loved and will be dearly missed by all who knew her. Stella went to be with the Lord surrounded by her loving family. She is living on in our hearts as well as in Heaven with God.
